Break the Fast I

This year (as in many of the past 20 or so), we broke the Yom Kippur fast at the home of
Elaine and Bob Sandy. There was quite a crowd present with the Sandy's son, Steven along with
Sarah Marder and her beau, Thomas. Jeff & Sally Seidenstein were there along with their
daughter Amy. Amy brought up a couple of friends from college (Indiana Univ). Plus,
Sally's mother (Florence) and brother Len (wife Randi) and their twin little girs. Let me not
forget the newcommers from Chicago, the Sachs'. We had the typical, wonderful Jewish
soul food of herring, other smoked fish, lox, bagels, Sally's noodle kugel, and Patty's stewed
vegetable dish, ratatouille. Special this year was the celebration of Elaine's birthday. A good
time was had by all !!

(L-R) Bob Mohn, Harry Hillenius, and Phil

Over the weekend of September 8th, we visited New York City. This semi-regular trek was for the overt purpose of seeing a couple of Broadway shows but as in the past, we did a little sight-seeing and visiting of friends. We once again stayed in the Meadowlands area of New Jersey which is just ten minutes from the heart of NYC. Arriving in the afternoon on Saturday, we boarded the NJ transit "320" bus and headed for the Port Authority building which is on 42nd Street and 8th Ave. This is just a couple of blocks from Times Square and the New York theater district. We ate an early (5:30 PM) dinner at the famous Sardi's restaurant and then strolled through Times Square and the NY theater district. Busy, busy, busy with tourists and show go-ers. We saw a new musical on Saturday called "Spring Awakening". This show sounds a little strange but because it won several Tony awards this year, we were looking forward to it. It's a "coming of age" musical set in the late 1890's in Germany. Understandably a weird premise but the cast and company pulled it off beautifully. After the show, we hoofed to the PA building and caught our bus back to the hotel. On Sunday, we slept in and then munched on some prized cheese danish pastries for breakfast. At about 11 AM, we jumped on the bus and went back into The City. Immediately, we walked uptown to the famous Carnegie Deli to split one of their famous over-stuffed sandwiches. In NY eateries like this, you share tables with strangers due to the cramped conditions of these places. Actually the other two couples had Ohio connections that we chatted about. We left the Carnegie and hoofed around Central Park on this lovely Sunday afternoon. Here we saw horse-drawn "hansom" cabs, softball games in the park, and the very lovely Bethesda Lake and fountain. We then walked quickly back to the Minskoff Theater to see our second show: The Lion King. This show was a feast for the eyes. Costumes and scenerey were fantastic! We loved the show! After the show we took our bus back to NJ and met up with our good friends, Bob/Ellen Mohn and Harry/Maureen Hillenius for a dinner at The Crow's Nest. This was a wonderful weekend for us in one of our favorite places to visit: NYC.

Opening night for the Colts

Phil enjoying a beer at pre-game tailgate ................David Abbott at the tailgate fire engine

Lucas Oil Stadium under construction .................................Fans file in before the big game

Colts get introduced to the crowd..................................Colts unfurl their Super Bowl banner

Phil attended the Indianapolis Colt's opening gala at the RCA Dome on Thursday night. The atomosphere was electric, reminding him a lot like last the Super Bowl in Miami last February. The game did not disappoint either. Peyton Manning showed his classic form but what suprised most folks was the intensity of the Colt's defense. What a night for Indy!!
